Fiction

Fiction is generally thought of as “stories” or “creative writing.” The Fiction collection includes Picture Books (E), which are designed for adults to read to children, Board Books (BOARDBOOK) that are sturdy enough for babies and toddlers to grasp, Easy Readers (ER) for beginning readers, and Juvenile Fiction, which includes chapter books in hardcover (J) and paperback (JP).

Non-Fiction

Non-Fiction books are also called “Informational” Books - this is where you will find facts about various subjects, such as turtles or the American Revolution. There are a few exceptions to the rule. Two notable examples are Poetry (811) and Folk & Fairy Tales (398.2).

The Non-Fiction books are divided into two collections, E and J. For example, E 597.92 is a book about turtles for young children, while J 597.92 is a book about turtles for children reading at a 3rd grade level or above. When looking for books on a particular subject, keep in mind that there may be books in another section that would be useful or enjoyable to you.

Periodicals

The library currently subscribes to 23 magazines for children on various topics and reading levels. The current issue remains in the library, while back issues are available for checkout. In addition, five subscriptions to magazines on topics related to parents are located by the seating area in the Parenting Collection.

Parenting

The Parenting Collection (PC) is located in the Youth Services area, near the storytime room. It includes books, videos, and magazines on topics related to parenting and the education of children. This collection includes topics such as infant and child development, health and nutrition, parenting skills, and resources for homeschooling families.

Audio-Visual

The Youth Services area includes a number of audio-visual collections. Videos for children are available in both Videocassette (J VID) and DVD (J DVD) formats. CD-ROMs (J CD-ROM) for use on your home computer are also available to check out.

Audiobooks are available on cassette (AUDIO TAPE JF) and CD (AUDIO CD JF). There is also a collection for young children and beginning readers that we refer to as “Readalongs” (CB). It consists of cassette tapes and books that are packaged together so children can listen to the story while they read along in the book.

Music for children is available on CD (CD CHILDREN) - we have a large collection that includes musical activities, holiday music and soundtracks.

Reference

Because they cannot be checked out, Reference books are always in the library for your use. This is helpful when you have to do a project on the Illinois state bird, for example, and all the books on that topic are already checked out. The Juvenile Reference collection (J REF) includes encyclopedias, almanacs, dictionaries, atlases, and other books that answer your questions quickly, or help get you started on a larger project. The collection includes books on Native Americans, wildlife, and famous people, to name a few. This collection is located just beyond the Youth Services Reference desk.
