WHAT IS GEEK THE LIBRARY?

Our library is taking part in a public awareness campaign designed to make people in our community more aware of the vital role of public libraries and bring attention to the critical funding issues many libraries face.

Geek Definition

Here at the New Lenox Public Library District, we have: 32 public access computers, an average of 1 computer for every 1,100 residents 143,237 books, movies, CDs and magazines for our 35,000 residents 36 staff which is about 1 staff member for every 950 residents An abundance of RESOURCES we want to share with residents to help you discover what you geek.

More and more public libraries do not have adequate funding to continue to provide the important resources communities require. Increased community support and funding is urgently needed to ensure that the library remains strong for everyone.

The public library’s role in building strong communities and providing valuable community resources is more important than ever, but as usage increases, many libraries simply don’t have sufficient funding to support the new demand.

Most public library funding comes from local dollars. The New Lenox Public Library receives 95% of the money to provide the materials, programs and services to patrons from local tax dollars. The other 5% comes from grants, fines and fees and donations. We receive $1.6 million to provide service to 35,000 residents which means that the library receives $45 per person. This is equivalent to about two hardcover books. Just like owning a home, the library must pay for certain services including: electricity, heating, cleaning and insurance.

Thanks to the community, we have a lovely building, but we are still working to pay it off and will be paying $1.2 million per year until 2018. That money is in addition to the $1.5 million we have, but is money that can only go to pay off the building and cannot be used to pay any other bills.
