You can now submit 3D print requests to be printed on the library's 3D printer, an Ultimaker 2+. The Ultimaker takes 3D designs you create or download from the Internet and makes a 3-dimensional object in plastic. 3D printing is used in a variety of fields, from hobbyists with desktop printers to corporations using commercial printers to create prototypes of new products and customized items.
- Items are $1.00 per ounce (minimum of $1.00 per item). Staff will send you a cost estimate.
- An email notification will be sent when your item is accepted for printing, and when ready for pick-up.
- New: Pick up your item and pay at the checkout desk downstairs in the lobby.
TinkerCAD Challenges for All Ages
The Studio staff run a monthly TinkerCAD Challenge. Follow the current Challenge, or work on any past Challenge you like! You can request one free TinkerCAD Challenge 3D print per month.
Questions & Answers
- Search or browse for objects ready to print or customize. You can go to Thingiverse, My Mini Factory, or one of these other sites for free designs.
- Design your own 3D object using 3D modeling software. Tinkercad is a simple 3D design application which is great for all ages and does not require any downloading. SketchUp and Fusion 360 are also recommended.
- Our PLA is not food safe. Cookie cutters are fine, but you shouldn't use this material to store food.
- All print jobs submitted must comply with the Library's 3D Printing Guidelines below.
- Builds should take a maximum of 7 hours to print. Longer builds may not be accepted.
- Your file must be submitted in .stl or .gcode format. Staff will check the quality of the file before printing. Some files may not be able to be converted to print.
- Your finished printed object must be smaller than 9 in x 8.8 in x 8 in (230mm x 225mm x 205mm).
- Printing is available on a first come, first-served basis and is done by library staff.
- We cannot guarantee a turn-around time for 3D printing. If you require a quick turn-around, please email the library at digitalmedialab@newlenoxlibrary.org.
The Library’s 3D printer is available to the public to make three dimensional objects in plastic using a design that is uploaded from a digital computer file. Patrons are not permitted to use the Library’s 3D printer to create objects which are:
- Prohibited by local, state or federal law.
- Unsafe, harmful, dangerous or pose a threat to the well-being of others.
- In violation of the terms of use of the manufacturer of the 3D printer.
- Obscene, sexually explicit or inappropriate for the library environment.
- In violation of a person’s intellectual property rights, e.g. the printer may not be used to reproduce objects which are protected by a copyright, patent or trademark.
The Library reserves the right to review and approve all materials before printing. The Library recognizes that an original design is the property of the designer and we will not duplicate that design for someone else. The Library cannot guarantee that a print job will be completed within a particular time frame. The Library cannot guarantee and is not liable for the final appearance of 3D printed objects. The Library is not liable for any damages, human injury, and/or costs in the event of a failure of a 3D printed object. If a 3D printed object is not picked up after 14 days, it becomes the Library’s property and a charge will be put on the patron’s library card. The Library reserves all rights to:
- Refuse any 3D print request.
- Stop printing a request due to time or printer capabilities.
- Set a limit as to the maximum amount of time a print job may take.
- Charge users for print requests.
- Limit the number of print requests.
- Limit access to and determine priority of 3D printing services.
- Change these rules at any time.
