Happy Halloween!

If you’ve been in the library lately, you no doubt have run into some of our Goofy Ghouls! There was a great turnout for this special Saturday event last week. Our frightening and fun-loving friends were treated to games, stories, tricks, treats, and crafts to get in the spirit for Halloween.

The Youth Services Department is all decked out with Halloween signs of the season. From our staff-decorated pumpkins to our friendly ghost, you can tell it’s the season to trick or treat!

Several of our staff members visited local schools for Spooky Book Talks. It was fun to see students come in right after school and request the books they had seen earlier in the day. We still have loads of Halloween books for you to choose from, so be sure to stop in for some sweet or spooky stories.

We love seeing our patrons in their costumes and hope the weather cooperates this year so that everyone will have a spooktacular evening. Above all, it never hurts to go over a few safety rules to ensure you have a safe Halloween:

Bison Bonanza!

A few years ago, I posted a blog about the introduction of bison at the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, just south of Elwood on Route 53. These amazing animals fascinate me, so with that in mind, I decided to feature them again with the upcoming Bison Crawl on November 2nd, presented by the Forest Preserve District of Will County.

The Forest Preserve District of Will County is hosting this event for you to learn more about these majestic animals on National Bison Day, November 2nd.

A small herd of bison was introduced to the Midewin Prairie in October of 2015. Part of the day’s festivities take will also take place there. To read about the Midewin herd, visit the USDA Forest Service website:

Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie

The history of the massive bison herds that once roamed the Great Plains is an important part of our past. Conservation efforts to bring back this animal from near extinction will be discussed at the Forest Preserve and National Prairie presentations. You might even be lucky enough to see the herd if you visit the Iron Bridge Trailhead. More information can be found at the Midewin website or at their Visitor’s center. Here are just a few of the books available at the library if you’d like a head start on learning about bison before you head out to the activities:

If you’re interested in doing further research (about bison or any other subject area), the library has databases available in Homework Help. When you scroll down the page, you will find Scholastic Go! which can be a great aid for school projects. This link will take you to more bison articles.

I hope this will inspire you to learn more about our national mammal and conservation efforts throughout the country to restore the bison to their home on the range.

Do you have a collection that you would love to share with others? If so, then the library is the place for you! Stop by the Youth Services desk to have your questions answered and to fill out the request form.

Currently, we have two collections on display, and we would love to fill the cases. Patrons enjoy stopping to look when they visit, so you might inspire someone to start collecting- just by sharing what you have collected!

This Hot Wheels display attracts young and old viewers. I know my four year old grandson would be crazy about all these cars along with the tidbits of information…and so would his dad:

Everyone stops at this display, too, as comments like “oh, how cute!” float through the air. Look how sweet and colorful these characters are:
